Armed with a BFA and a serious need to draw, I began my illustration career in 1980. Surviving 8 years in newspapers as an art director and the noxious fumes from my painting process, I lives and work in Ann Arbor. A teacher for over 25 years at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, my oil paintings have appeared in numerous publications and have earned awards from, among others, Print, Communication Arts and the Society of Publication Designers.

Painting is a creative way for me to freeze a special moment in time, to capture an emotion, the beauty of innocence or the passion for something or someone. l am a child at heart and l love to portray in great detail, I am drawn to everyday life, animals/pets and the strength of the human body. Painting can be a challenge, but it is exciting, fulfilling and very rewarding to depict my interpretation using saturated watercolors, incorporating a variety of techniques, like salt, ink, collage or scratching for texture to convey a more improved affect. Painting is a huge part of my life as well as photography. So, it works out great when working on a commissioned painting or on a pet portrait. It is my hope that my art entertains, pleases and ultimately inspires you.

I'm an artist at large - I paint watercolors (MFA), oils, mixed media and the occasional theatre set. I love when I meet others who overlap along with me in various art disciplines (music, theatre, fine art and design!) Current projects include murals, helping empower others through art, book illustration, painting fanciful fish, and creating 'tunnel' books.

As a professional illustrator, I carry the precision of illustration into my fine art. I enjoy exploring exciting ranges of color, texture and light. I like to present common objects such as food, still lifes, and animals in unusual and interesting ways. Each stroke is applied with the spirit of the subject matter in mind. Inspiration comes from the beauty and simplicity found in nature or things we encounter everyday, which can be overlooked in our hurried lives.

Rooted in ten years of tap dancing as a kid (thanks Mom!), my feet started trembling with excitement when, as a young adult, I first discovered Appalachian clogging and other forms of traditional percussive stepdancing. I knew immediately that this was what I’d been preened for, and have been intimately involved with the traditional music and dance community since the 1980s. I was a founding member of and choregrapher for The Crosstown Cloggers, Crow’s Feet and The Commonwealth Dance Collective, and also spent several years performing as a soloist with a local stringband. My current performance configuration is Matter & Ghost - a collaboration with Michigan’s official state troubadour, Neil Woodward. I am the dance instructor and choreographer for two high school fiddle groups in Washtenaw County, and run ongoing adult clogging classes. Private lessons and special teaching/performance situations are always considered. It took me many years and many miles traveled to find qualified instructors to teach me the art of traditional stepdancing, and am thus extremely dedicated to passing on the material I’ve had the pleasure of learning to any interested folks.
